The Spanish group's proposal is a new generation of shopping carts, lighter than those in metal. Made in polypropylene, they can be produced in different colours. The material of which the Polycart shopping carts are made of is approved for food contact because it doesn't contain toxic substances. Made entirely in plastic, these shopping carts are completely recyclable and their nesting distance is minimum (less than 250 mm.). They are designed to hold up to four advertising pannels around their basket. Being plastic made, the Polycart is 100% compatible with automatic check out systems through RFID technology.
RFID technology, the future of shopping carts.
Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID), allows to identify an object, to follow it's traceability and to know it's features from a distance thanks to wave emitting labels attached to the object.
RFID technology opmitizes the reading of the labels and provides with the product's information in real time. Used at the beginning as an anti-theft device, RFID is destined to replace bar codes at supermarkets. Simply by going through an arch we will get the buying ticket not needing to place all the goods on the check out's conveyor belt.

The Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Innovation presented the Polycart, a shopping cart with a longer lifespan and respectful with the environment, manufactured by the Valencian Company Industrias Tomás Morcillo, S.L..
During her visit to this Company, the Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Innovation, Belén Juste, mentioned the innovative nature of the companies based in the Autonomous Region of Valencia and expressed that the firm which has boosted this innovative shopping cart is a "clear example that the companies in the Autonomous Region are leaders in the development of high quality and high added value innovative products", explained Juste, who assured that "this guarantees a wide international presence and exclusive business opportunity for the company".
Industrias Tomás Morcillo, S.L., a plastic injection moulding and tool and die making Company, manufactures the Polycart exclusively for the whole world. A shopping cart with a longer lifespan and environmentally friendlier than those metallic.
It is the beggining of a "new generation of shopping carts", due that it is the only one manufactured in a single block of 100% recyclable polypropylene, said Juste. The raw material it is made of is ready for food contact not having any toxic additives. Its comfort and ease of use "are other benefits of the Polycart", she added.

The Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Innovation took the opportunity to "encourage the companies with innovative projects, such as Industrias Tomás Morcillo to make use of the instruments available from the Small and Medium Valencian Industry Institute (IMPIVA), IVEX and the different departments of the Secretariat".
The Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Innovation also informed about the Special Support Plan for the Production Sectors (Plan Especial de Apoyo a los Sectores Productivos) recently activated within the Confidence Plan (Plan de Confianza) aimed to "improve the productivity and competitiviness of the industry and the service sectors", she said.

The containers of the future will be intelligent. That will happen because they will have the ability to indicate whether the food or cosmetics they hold are well conserved or not.
At the shopping center there will also be innovations for the retailer and the customer. The check out lines, as well as the metallic shopping carts at the stores are destined to dissapear from this environment. Instead plastic shopping carts and arc-scanners as those at the airports will simplify and accelerate all the check out tasks. All that thanks to the thriving Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) Technology, which main current implementation of being an antitheft device for a few products, represents less that the fifth part of what it may feature.
Valencian companies such as Caiba, Cárnicas Serrano or Industrias Tomás Morcillo are already working with this technology at their Research and Development Departments, with a logistics and commercial model in mind that may look like science fiction but which is less than ten years away.
Currently, the implementation of Radiofequency Identification (RFID) Technology is starting at the internal and intermediate logistics processes, but in less than a decade we can count on these devices replacing the bar codes at the supermarkets. This way, by just going under an arc-scanner we will be able to have our shopping ticket ready, not having to place one by one all the items from our shopping cart onto the check out counter.
That's how at least believes it passionately Mr. Tomás Morcillo, president of the plastic injection moulding Company of the same name. That's why he is already working for both sides of the retail distribution chain: at the begining with pallets that incorporate the RFID label, and at the end with a shopping cart entirely made of plastic that among other benefits it features being completely transparent for the reading of the arc-scanners, he explains.
The benefits of implementing such technology individually to all products at the shelves is obvious. It will end with unknown sales, steals and replacement failures.
As Mr. Morcillo describes, "the shelf has a receiver that detects when a product is out of place, but also if it's been taken, not having to wait until the customer leaves the store, which is very useful on a saturday afternoon at rush hour."
Some retail companies such as the German Metro are close to that inmediate future and have already implemented this shopping model at a pilot store which they have named The Future Store.
The main obstacle for its spread is the price, which still exceeds the 10 Euro cent level. But massive production of RFID devices is already a fact.
With this future store in mind, ITM has started to manufacture the first units of the Polycart, a shopping cart made entirely of virgin polypropylene which main benefits over metallic shopping carts is that it weighs just 14 kilos, less than half of those, and that it never looses its original shape and resits outdoor conditions.
Once the RFID labels are spread not only it will be a better shopping cart, but it will be essential, because the metallic cart produces a cage effect and prevents the proper reading of the RFID labels producing also interferences inside the store.

The labelling of the products with RFID Technology will feature many benefits, but currently it faces an enemy at retail, the shopping cart. This problem can be solved with polypropylene shopping carts which allow a clear reading and without interferences at the RFID scanning areas. Spain has researched and developed the Polycart, currently being comercialized as the only shopping cart in the world made in a single block of recyclable plastic. The shopping cart is light weight, nimble and easy to hadle. Besides it never rusts, so it features a longer lifespan.
AECOC, Spanish Association of Retail Codes (Asociación Española de Códigos de Comercio), at its demo center in Barcelona, shows the Polycart as the first shopping cart already 100% compatible with RFID Technology together with the state of the art technology for electronic labelling.
